Piece count is the single best predictor of LEGO build time: a 300 piece set takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, a 1,000 piece set takes 3 to 4 hours, a 3,000 piece set takes 8.5 to 12 hours, and a 10,000 piece display set takes 26 to 36 hours. Those figures assume an average adult builder working at a comfortable pace on a standard, non-Technic set.

The three adjustments that actually matter
Technic sets are roughly 40% slower. Sub-assemblies, gearing and pin work drop the pace from about 300 pieces per hour to about 170. A 2,000 piece Technic set is a 10 to 14 hour build, not a 6 to 8 hour one.

Small sets are slower per piece than you would expect. Under 500 pieces, the effective pace drops to around 250 pieces per hour. Small sets are mostly detail, and detail is slow. This is why a 300 piece set does not take a third of the time of a 900 piece set.
Very large sets are faster per piece. Above 3,000 pieces, big display models lean on repetitive techniques: long walls, repeated sections, layered plates. The pace rises to around 330 pieces per hour. The set still takes many hours, but each individual piece goes in faster.
How these numbers are calculated
The estimate is piece count divided by build pace, with a complexity tier:
- Standard sets: 300 pieces per hour
- Large display sets (over 3,000 pieces): 330 pieces per hour
- Small sets (under 500 pieces): 250 pieces per hour
- Technic and mechanism-heavy sets: 170 pieces per hour
A 15% band either side turns each figure into a range, because a single number would be false precision. The model is calibrated against documented adult build times: it puts the Millennium Falcon at 20 to 27 hours against a widely reported 20 hours, and Technic sets like the Bugatti Chiron at 18 to 25 hours against a reported 20 to 30.
These are estimates, and we label them as such. Once a set has five or more logged builds in the SetSquad app, its page shows the measured median from real timed sessions instead.

What piece count does not tell you
Two sets of the same size can feel completely different. A 2,000 piece modular building is 2,000 pieces of varied, engaging work. A 2,000 piece set with a large repeated structure can be faster in hours and duller in experience. Piece count predicts time well; it predicts enjoyment badly.
