How Long Do LEGO Harry Potter Sets Take to Build?

By The SetSquad Team · Updated July 30, 2026

LEGO Harry Potter sets range from about 1.5 hours to about 21 hours of building. Hogwarts Castle (71043) is the longest at an estimated 16 to 21 hours, Diagon Alley follows at 15 to 20 hours, and the newer Collectors' Edition models sit comfortably in the 4.5 to 13 hour range.

Harry Potter is unusual among LEGO themes: the big sets are made of modules, which changes how you plan them.

Estimates for an average adult builder, based on piece count and set complexity.

The modular advantage

Most big LEGO sets are one continuous build. Several of the largest Harry Potter sets are not.

Diagon Alley is four separate shopfronts. Each one is roughly 1,400 pieces, or about 4 hours. You can build one, put it on the shelf, and come back in a fortnight without losing your place.

Hogwarts Castle is a single connected model, but it is built in distinct towers and wings, and the instructions keep those sections separate.

The 2026 Collectors' Editions take this furthest. The East Wing is designed to stand alongside an existing castle rather than replace it, which is why a flagship-feeling Hogwarts set is only a 6.5 to 8.5 hour build.

For build planning this matters more than the total. A 20 hour set in four 5 hour chunks is a very different proposition from a 20 hour set you have to keep on the table.

The small display sets

The quickest way into the theme is the display models. Fawkes at 597 pieces is an estimated 1.5 to 2.5 hours, an evening, and Wizard's Chess at 873 pieces is 2.5 to 3.5 hours.

Both are also unusually good "first timed build" sets, because they finish inside one session and give you a clean number to compare against later.

What piece count does not capture here

Harry Potter sets have two features that push the real time above a straight piece count calculation:

Our estimates use a pace of about 330 pieces per hour for large display sets and about 300 for standard ones, which averages this out. For a minifigure-heavy set, expect to land in the upper half of the range rather than the lower.

Getting your own number

Every figure here is an estimate, based on piece count and complexity, and labelled as such on the set page. Once five or more builders have timed a set in the SetSquad app, the page switches to the measured median from real sessions.
