Large LEGO sets, meaning anything over roughly 3,000 pieces, take an estimated 10 to 40 hours to build. A 4,000 piece set runs about 11 to 14 hours, a 6,000 piece set about 16 to 21 hours, and the largest retail sets, like the 10,001 piece Eiffel Tower, about 26 to 36 hours.
That is a project, not an evening. Here is what those hours actually look like, set by set.

Why big sets are faster per piece
This surprises people: a 6,000 piece set does not take six times as long as a 1,000 piece set. It takes closer to five times as long.
Large display models rely on repetition. Long walls, layered plate sections, repeated windows, symmetrical halves. Once you have built one section you build the next three faster. Our model reflects this by raising the pace from about 300 pieces per hour on a standard set to about 330 pieces per hour above 3,000 pieces.
The exception is Technic. A large Technic model has no such shortcut, because every sub-assembly is different and the pace stays around 170 pieces per hour. The Bugatti Chiron is 3,599 pieces and still an 18 to 25 hour build, longer than the 4,024 piece Death Star.
What 20 hours actually looks like
Nobody builds the Titanic in one go. In practice, a large set is a sequence of sessions, and the numbered bags define them.
- The Millennium Falcon at 20 to 27 hours is roughly seven to nine evenings of three hours, or three long weekend days.
- The Eiffel Tower at 26 to 36 hours is a multi-week project for most people. It is also famously repetitive in its middle third, which is where builders stall.
- The Avengers Tower at 14 to 19 hours is the sweet spot many builders describe: big enough to feel like an event, small enough to finish in two weekends.
The practical planning unit is the bag, not the hour. A large set with 40 numbered bags gives you 40 natural stopping points, and most people stop at one.
How fast can it be done?
Very fast, if you are competing. The Guinness World Record for the fastest build of the Millennium Falcon is 7 hours 27 minutes 9 seconds, and the Eiffel Tower record is 9 hours 14 minutes 35 seconds. Both are roughly a third of the estimated time for an average adult, which tells you how much of a normal build is deciding, searching and pausing rather than assembling.

Before you buy a big set
Three questions worth answering honestly:
- Do you have the sessions? A 25 hour build needs eight or nine free evenings within a few weeks, or it stalls half-built on the table.
- Do you have the space? Not just for the finished model, but for the sorted bags during the build.
- Do you want the build or the model? Some large sets are wonderful to display and tedious to build. The build-time estimate tells you the cost; only reviews tell you the experience.
